The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services is considering a big change to Medicare enrollment: automatic enrollment into a Medicare Advantage plan instead of Medicare Parts A and B. Under this proposal, you would be placed into a private insurance plan by default and would have to opt out to make your own decision.

While some people are well-served by Advantage plans, they aren't one-size-fits-all. With an automatic enrollment, there's no one checking to see if your doctors are in network and no one checking to confirm that your medications are covered. You would be doing that yourself (or with the help of a broker). And if you don't opt out in time, you could be stuck with a plan that doesn't work for you.

If this passes, the question you would ask isn't "Should I enroll," it's "Do I stay or do I opt out?" For right now, we're watching this to see how it will affect our clients.
